POSITION OVERVIEW

The Software Safety Engineer is responsible for performance of risk and hazard analyses on integrated systems forming part of advanced weapons systems for the DoD. Responsible for oversight of a portfolio of engineering developments and will provide assurance of engineering activities. Support design engineers to build evidence-based safety cases for their products and ensure compliance to hardware and software engineering processes for safety-critical and safety-related systems.

Job Responsibilities

The Software Safety Engineer will be responsible for building the body of evidence necessary to demonstrate the safety of these products through formal safety cases. Specific tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Develop software safety targets and software safety requirements
  • Execute hazard analyses required to support the identification of software safety requirements in accordance with business standards and program/product objectives
  • Develop specific application, generic application, and generic product safety cases
  • Document and communicate results of technical data generated to internal and external customers
  • Coordinate the timely production of the necessary design safety documentation, especially the relevant safety cases and related documentation for approval milestones
  • Conduct/facilitate PHA, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis and other safety studies with Engineering groups
  • Develop and maintain a Hazard Tracking Log

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) related discipline with five (5) years or more of related experience
  • Or a Master's Degree and three (3) years or more experience
  • Experience operating as a software safety engineer (or senior engineer with software safety and assurance responsibilities) across complex, large-scale systems
  • Familiarity with design, test, and analysis tools and systems
  • Familiarity with Hazard Analysis per MIL-STD 882E
  • Experience operating in a regulated industry preferred

Other Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship is required
  • Active Secret Security Clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance
